Sustainable cultivation of olive trees by reusing olive mill wastes after effective co-composting treatment processes

چکیده
Olive oil production is associated with extremely polluting byproducts causing serious environmental problems in most Mediterranean countries. These highly polluting residues are currently disposed of in the soil, rivers or lakes or where treatment methods have been applied, they were proven insufficient or nonfeasible under the Greek situation. On the other hand strict EU environmental legislation could force the olive oil mills to close unless a viable and environmentally sound solution is adopted. This paper reports on an integrated viable solution to the olive mill waste problem. The method involves the olive oil removal from wastewater, their detoxification by Fenton oxidation reactions and following their utilization by biological treatment methods (anaerobic digestion and co-composting).

Potential of olive mill wastes for soil C sequestration.
The present work deals with the potential of olive mill wastes as a C source for soil C sequestration strategy, which is based on the high lignocellulosic content that makes these wastes to degrade slowly during composting and after land application. A C balance was performed during the whole life cycle of two different two-phase olive mill wastes (TPOMW): C losses were calculated during the co...

The co-composting of olive oil mill wastes and household refuse was followed for 5 months. During the thermophilic phase of composting, the aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (AHB) count, showed a significant rise with a slight regression of fungal biomass. In the same way, phospholipid fatty acids PLFAs common in bacteria, showed a significant increase of hydroxyl and branched PLFAs. The evaluatio...
متن کاملRaw and Microbiologically Detoxified Olive Mill Waste and their Impact on Plant Growth
Olive-oil production is of vital importance for the economy and social life of the Mediterranean region; however, the side effect of the olive-oil mill activity is the generation of enormous quantities of biotoxic olive-mill waste within a short period of three months. Numerous physicochemical and biological methods have been used in the past for the treatment of both olive mill wastewater (OMW...
متن کاملAssessment of microbial pools by an innovative microbiological technique during the co-composting of olive mill by-products
Different mixtures of olive pomace (OP), olive mill wastewater (OMWW) and olive pruning residues (OPR) were aerobically co-composted under natural conditions. Compost temperature showed a sharp increase in the first 40 60 days, followed by a stabilization at 60°C and a decline after 150 days, whereas compost water content ranged from 50% 55% to 25% 30%. Total and selective microbial counts were...
متن کاملEffect of herbicide and soil amendment on growth and photosynthetic responses in olive crops.
Diuron [3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)- = 1,1-dimethylurea] and simazine (6-chloro-N(2), N(4)-diethyl-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diamine) are soil-applied herbicides used in olive crops. The objective of this study is to investigate the combined effect of these herbicides and the amendment of soil with an organic waste (OW) from the olive oil production industry on the growth and photosynthetic apparatus of ad...
